Mill Studio, Portree, Isle of Skye

Information Thumbnails

Mill Studio took its name from the old woollen mill buildings and mill pond that sit adjacent to our plot. The densely wooded wedge-shaped site close to the centre of Portree had been ignored for many years due to the proximity of the burn and utilities running through the site, constricting the usable area.

The challenges of the site were addressed with a narrow building presenting a glazed long elevation over the burn with views to the surrounding woodland. The garden has become a wildlife haven in the heart of Portree; we have all become enthusiastic ornithologists!

The building was constructed on a budget, borrowing an industrial architecture reminiscent of the historic mill industry on the neighbouring site. Internally the steel frame has been left apparent. The open plan workspace, fitted-out with bespoke CNC-cut furniture, is separated from the back-of house areas by a gathering space, providing an area for reception, informal meetings and staff dining.

The whole Rural Design team were involved in the design and delivery of the project which has given us a flexible open-plan and inspirational working environment.
